Prepping for the 465 Challenge

I am trying to decide if I complete the 53 mile 465 Challenge in the first 24 hours. Of course I would continue to add miles on for the rest of the time allowed to complete the virtual challenge.  I started thinking maybe completing it on my mountain bike or setting out and completing on my road bike.  There is no way I would be able to finish the distance running, for me at this time.
I am almost complete with my other winter challenge I have going on.

I encourage you to sign up for it too starts when the New Year does. So you have time to sign up and get motived in these colder months ahead and keep active.

Log miles on the challenge from Jan. 1, 2020 to Feb. 29, 2020.  The miles can be completed by Run, Bike, Swim, Jump, Walk, just complete the 53 miles. Why 53 miles?  Starting at I-65 on the Southside, the 465 is a 53 mile loop around Indianapolis.
So what are you waiting for?

The 465 Challenge!

Let’s face it, it gets cold outside during the winter and for me that cuts back on my training time outside. Needing or having a challenge makes working out and training in the winter better.
I have some other challenges going on to keep me motivated, but the latest one that I have signed up for, and I encourage you to sign up for it too starts when the New Year does. So you have time to sign up and get motived in these colder months ahead and keep active.

2018 is here!

2018 is here!
I have some big goals and ideas I want to tackle here in 2018.  A big one is incorporating more weights in my workouts. Becoming stronger on the road and mountain bike. I have been putting together a workout and training plan that will help me improve not only my power on the bike but endurance as well.
As I get started with my training program for the year, I am continuing my roller workouts either at my house or bringing the rollers with me.

Useful tips and tricks for having a great training swim

Four things that I find super useful when swim training.  Although summer swimming season is halfway over, these four items can be used when swimming at indoor pools too.

Baby Shampoo, Rubbing Alcohol, waterproof music player, corrective lens goggles.

First off baby shampoo.  No, not to wash your hair with before or afterwards. Baby shampoo is great for helping keep your swim goggles from fogging up.  Place a small drop of the baby shampoo in each lens, rub it around coating the entire inside. Let it sit for a few seconds then rinse out with cold water.  Don’t rub the lenses on the inside when rinsing, just use the force of the water coming out of the faucet.  With the “no-tears" properties of the shampoo, if you miss rinsing a little bit of it, it’s no big deal.  I have to use this method when I start having trouble with them fogging up.  Give it a try.

Second on the list, is a good pair of swim goggles.  There are some corrective lens swimming goggles out there but the best I have found and love are Barracuda USA goggles.  They make non-corrective lens goggles as well. Although much of lap swimming is staring at a line on the bottom of a pool, clear vision is still important.
As a triathlete, good vision in an open water swim is crucial to staying on course and exiting the water. This is sometimes hard enough as it is but add having difficulty seeing and becomes a little harder.  Exiting the water in a triathlon and running to your bike can sometimes feel overwhelming. Barracuda USA corrective lens goggles have made seeing that lane line as well as the edge of the pool that much sharper, vision wise. The H2RX Blue (blue strap, clear lens) and the H2RX Smoke (black strap, tinted lens) come in diopter corrections of -1.50 to -10.00. These high quality made goggles come with three different size nose bridges to customize the fit better to each persons facial features as well as two adjusting straps making sure the goggles stay put on your face. The fit is very comfortable and the anti-fog coating is excellent. The goggles come with a protective case to store them in when you are not wearing them. The wide angle view is incredible. All it would take to see if you would benefit from wearing these corrective lens Barracuda USA swimming goggles is a call to you eye doctor.  Give them your vision prescription and see if they can help you out telling you what diopter correction you would need. Simple as that.  In the long run it will save you from swimming a longer open water course in a race, or worse grabbing someone else's bike in transition.

Next up is a waterproof MP3 music player A.K.A. iPod with case. I enjoy using numerous audio set ups from X-1.  Not only are the headphones sweat proof but underwater proof too.  The devices I own have fueled many a sweaty and or pool workout.  I am either seen at the pool with my X-1 case for my 3rd generation iPod Nano that I wear in a Velcro belt or the Interval 4G waterproof headphone system attached to my goggle strap.  I guess you could say the one I use the most, is the one that is charged ready to go.  Both securely hold my iPod and keep it dry yet allow me to use my playlist to push my workouts to the edge. Each set of headphones comes with different tip sizes that can be easily swapped out to fit comfortably, however I have had custom ear molds made at Gold Canyon Hearing, a local hearing business, helping to make sure the ear phones stay in place.  The smallest bit of water still gets in my ears, but the custom molds totally help with ear issues and getting tons of water in the ear. The set up is awesome. I fire up a good playlist and away I go.  Swim workouts are very enjoyable and the music helps me stay focused.  Really the only drawback is losing track of time and laps.  Also, make sure then you keep an eye on your battery level of your device, not having the battery charged makes for a long and sometimes dreadful swim workout.

I advise only using your headphones while running, swimming, at the gym or other activity other than cycling on the road.  Using a headset while cycling is dangerous, as the rider must be listening for traffic and others around them.

Finally is rubbing alcohol.  Although the custom ear pieces I had made from molds of the inside of my ear seal all water out, if you were to swim without ear plugs of any type, water might get in your ears.  After getting out, drop a few drops of rubbing alcohol in each ear doing one ear at a time.  Tip your head and let the water stuck in your ear drain out. It’s a very simple and easy fix to removing water from our ear.  There are special drops or liquids on the market that do the same, but save yourself a little money and just go with the rubbing alcohol.

A little rant about headphones, and when not to wear them

I can relate to listening to music gets you motivated and the time go by faster I guess.
I just don’t get it.  Why would you risk your safety by wearing earphones while riding a bike in traffic or with other cyclists?  This may seem like a rant and I guess it is.  It could be compared to riding with with one eye shut.  It’s just dumb.  If you have an important phone call your waiting for and that is why you are wearing a headset, then I suggest you don’t ride and wait for the call to come in.
I often wears earphones while swimming and indoor cycling on a trainer.  I even wear them running, while keeping the sound down in order to hear my surroundings.

Infinite Swim

When it comes to triathlon swim training, what's the hardest part?  Often it’s finding a lap pool to train in? For some it’s being able to train while traveling on business. It's not easy doing a swim workout in a small hotel pool, and that is where the Infinite Swim comes in to play.
Infinite Swim has the solution and can turn any size pool into a pool for training.

Infinite Swim comes with an adjustable waist belt, which hooks onto a bungee cord. Set the Infinite Swim frame on the side of the pool. Fill the water weight with pool water or a hose if nearby. The jets in the pool will help fill the weight faster if they are running. Place the water weight, now weighing 35 pounds filled with water, on the frame and your good to go.

Ease into the pool and don’t push off the side. Float out away from the side of the pool until the bungee cord is pulled tight. Now just begin swimming. Work on drills or use any swim stroke, without worrying about getting caught in any cables or ropes. The Infinite Swim set up provides 25 pounds of resistance.  Who is this device for you might ask? The Infinite Swim can be used by amateurs or competitive swimmers and will provide a perfect swim training workout. Never miss a swim workout for those who often travel, as it folds small enough to fit in carry-on suitcase.

This device is also great or those triathletes who train and need or want to video themselves and their swim stroke. Staying in place, you can capture video from the side of the pool or even under the water with a GoPro. For instance in a freestyle stroke, you can look back and see, is your hand entering the water or exiting the water in right place to get the most out of your stroke. Often a swim coach or triathlon coach, if being coached from online, will ask to see footage of you swimming. They are wanting to analyze your stroke to make you more efficient.

I’ve used the Infinite Swim in a pool as shallow as three foot deep as well as eight foot deep, it still works the same. Once again,  just don’t jump in while attached to the device. Ease into the pool and slowly swim away from the side. Now of course you won’t get a distance training workout in, but you can still time yourself. You still get the same motion you would as if you were swimming laps but added bonus of not having to do flip turns to keep going.

So you've seen how it works, now you need one.

New Wave Swim Buoy -- Be Bright, Be Seen!

Have you ever wanted to improve your safety open water (lake) swimming either with yourself or with a group?
Let's face it, open water swimming is a great workout.  Swimming in open water is difficult to get comfortable with and still at any moment, one can get into a panic situation.  Some swimmers, while out in the water, might even get a cramp and need to rest. Knowing and using the New Wave Swim Buoy attached to you while open water swimming and close by will relieve some mental stress.

This floating buoy has a chamber inside for your belongings as well as an air chamber you inflate before using. Stash your belongings inside the dry bag compartment, so your belongings won't be messed with, by leaving them on the shore. The New Wave Swim Buoy is not a substitute for having lifeguards or kayakers around while swimming in open water. Also having the brightly colored (this one is a neon green, but they also some in other bright colors) buoy nearby while swimming increasing the safety around boaters.

The buoy is easy to inflate. Simply unscrew the valve, inflate by blowing into it, then tighten down the screw valve to keep the air inside. I store my belongings into the dry bag chamber before inflating.
The New Wave Swim Buoy does not hinder your swimming stroke or kicking yet is nearby incase of emergency. The inflatable buoy simply attaches to a belt on your waist and is pulled along effortlessly behind you.  The waist belt is adjustable as so it the leash attached to the buoy. The New Wave Swim Buoy’s waist belt can even be worn over the top of your wetsuit. With wetsuits being black, in some cases depending upon the water conditions, it is very difficult to see a swimmer in the water.
Inside the New Wave Swim Buoy dry bag chamber is big enough to take along your keys, nutrition, GPS and even a small towel for drying off with when you get out of the water.  Valuables you would not want to leave on the shore or in a car. The bright color attracts attention to you being in the water to boaters, jet skis, and other hazards. It is made of PVC and with care can last a long time. Rinse the New Wave Swim Buoy with clean water and store properly when your not using it. The New Wave Swim Buoy comes in two sizes. Either the 15 liter or 20 liter. The size depends on the weight of swimmer. They New Wave Swim Buoy also comes in TPU material, safe for use in swimming pools with chemicals.

The New Wave Swim Buoy is not a life saving device.

Wearing a bright swim cap while in the water can also draw attention and alert others where you are in the water.

Check them out and order yours.  Increase your safety in the open water.

Ameo PowerBreather

Ameo PowerBreather

The Ameo PowerBreathera type of snorkel/breathing device that allows you to keep your head down while swimming laps. No need to tilt your head to the side to take a breathe. My first go at wearing the Ameo PowerBreather, swimming snorkel, I was totally blown away at how easy it was to learn and use. The first couple breathes I was bringing in a little water in through my mouth.  After a quick adjustment to the two up tubes, it was working just fine. It might take awhile to get used to breathing in just the mouth and not wanting to bring air in your through your nose. For myself, my normal swimming breathing is, in through the mouth and out the nose as I am under water. The two snorkel tubes run up long each side of the head. It also took a little bit of time to assemble from the case it came it and fit correctly over the head. From the mouthpiece, the side tubes pivot from there. There is an adjustment dial on the back of the unit so it fits perfectly.

Using this snorkel will allow for time to focus on good stroke and body alignment in the water. It comes disassembled in a carrying case. I had a little bit of the difficult time attaching the pieces together with the vents. I probably will end up just leaving it assembled as it was time consuming to put it together and take it apart after each use. I wish the case would have been bigger then to carry it fully put together. Other traditional snorkels on the market mix Co2, what you are expelling, with fresh air trying to make it down the same tube, allowing you to get oxygen.

With the Ameo PowerBreather is designed to pull in fresh air w/oxygen, not mixed with exhaling Co2, to enter from the top tubes and the air you expel leaves through a vent on the bottom, close to your mouth. The air is expelled underwater, of course creating bubbles. I have yet to try using it to perform flip turns, but I am super impressed with its design and function.  In my Twitter feed and blog you will see more of this device as I begin to incorporate this to improve me swimming.

First month completed with Ironman training

The first months training is finished. I have struggled to keep all my swim workouts, but with summer just around the corner, that should not be a problem. More pools will be open and hours will be increased to get my much needed laps in. All three disciplines are going well and the weight training workouts are great. A few challenging drills here and there. I have even had my daughter and son join in on some of the indoor workouts.  I think my daughters favorite is burpees and wall sits.  I feel my running is getting better, although a lot of my workouts have been kept in my Heart Rate of  Zone 2.  I started off on the indoor rollers, as the weather started off cold, but have been able to get miles in on the road as of lately. A few pounds have been lost and I can see more being lost along the way training.  I thank my family for working with me and helping me to obtain this goal.  If you care to join me on a ride, a run or even a swim in the pool let me know. If you are willing to help me out on my race day, I would love that too.  I am in the beginning stages of mapping out my course.

140.6 I'm coming for YOU!
