An update on my issue with plantar fasciitis. I’m winning!

The past three weeks have been pretty bad at times. It’s not keeping me down. I’m able to do my weight and strength workouts as well as my mountain bike training.
Icing with Frozen Peaz and stretching not just muscles in my foot, but my calves, hamstrings and hips too.
You wouldn’t think that driving a car would be hard or cause issues but it has at times. Driving in traffic and my (right) foot is constantly either on the gas or brake pedal. At times it was extremely painful to drive.
Knowing that my son had his first mountain bike race of the season, two and a half hour drive up north, driving was going to be difficult. Once on the highway and up to speed I was able to get use the cruise control option. Taking my foot off the gas pedal every so often and stretch it out. I also brought the best thing yet and it has really helped.
A few treatments with the JigSaw massage gun (I’ve been able to go cordless, I’ll update on that later) and using a pair of vibrating insoles.  I had these insoles for a few years now and they are very interesting. They are remote control operated and one insole can be place in each shoe.  Once we got on the road, I was able to use the right foot insole and keep a constant vibration on the sole of my foot. It helped a TON.  I have been using the insole too now while sitting at my desk for longer periods of time.
I am hoping and praying this will do the trick and knock out the issue for good.

On a side note, my son did great on his first race and I am excited to see him complete the rest of the season. Four more races to go!

On the mend

Over the past few months, I have been having issues with my right foot. The bottom of it to be exact and having plantar fasciitis.  I am doing stretches daily, a few times in fact. My brother has loaned me a splint to use a few times a day, helping isolate the bottom of my foot for stretching and provides a gentle stretch to my plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. I have been strapping my foot in this device and sitting with my foot in it, twice a day for 30 minutes at a time.
I follow it up placing FrozenPeaz then on my foot.

I have to say it is working and my foot is starting to feel better and the pain is going away. It will take some time, but it's not an overnight fix.

Using Frozen Peaz to treat Plantar Fasciitis using them 20 min on, 20 min on twice a day.
Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (RICE)

Frozen Peaz can be used on many placed on the body. Knee, elbow, foot, neck, etc.  Although I am using them here in their cold state, with the Peaz Pod, they can be used with heat as well.

Letting my foot recover using Frozen Peaz

The plantar fasciitis is still bothering my right foot. I have stopped running, but am continuing with my strength program and have moved to riding more road bike as of late. The riding keeps the pounding off of my foot.
Wearing my OS1 compression sleeves and socks along with using Frozen Peaz to treat the bottom, from heel to toe with cold compression.

Suffering from plantar fasciitis

Running is causing me pain.  I mentioned before in my blog that I never have suffered from plantar fasciitis, well, until now.
I don’t know if it’s the shoes I’ve been wearing that have broken down, don’t fit proper any longer or what. The last few months I have woken up to getting out of bed to the first steps being very painful in my right foot.
A few weeks back I started working on some home remedies. Stretching, massage and Frozen Peaz treatments and wearing compression gear, both calf sleeves and socks to help with the pain. The pain goes away for a little bit, but returns.  I have been able to get a few runs in here and there, but nothing to a regular training routine like I would like to be doing. The longest my runs have been is about three miles.  After I do a Frozen Peaz treatment the pain is better, but knowing that after that run I will pay the price in the next two to three days.
I have started to wear an older pair of orthotics in my day to day walking shoes. They seem to be helping me during the daytime that’s for sure.
I will get out running more soon, but before that I might need to make an appointment to the foot doctor to get things checked out and see what I need to do.

Rumble Roller's GATOR

(No Live Animals Inside the box)

In celebration of National Foam Rolling Day, I wanted to share this with everyone. The best way to relax and recover is with a foam roller.  The Rumble Roller line of myofascial release products is the answer.  Recently Rumble Roller released their GATOR.   Its small “teeth” grip the skin for a very soothing cross-friction massage. The Rumble Roller Gator is a heavy duty deep tissue roller unlike your typical foam roller.  I use it to help in recovery after training or racing. It’s versatile in the areas of the body. I tend to use it mainly on my lower body targeting my hamstrings, quadriceps, calves and glutes.  After riding my glutes tend to tighten up and using the roller to help those muscles recover.  After a long run and on recovery days, rolling my calves.  Adding a little more pressure at times, I cross legs, at the calf, with only one of them on the roller to treat tight muscles.  There is a difference in the regular Rumble Roller and the GATOR and swap them from time to time.  A great way to release tight back and shoulders, I slowly and deliberately lay down on the roller, rolling on it from my neck down to my mid back.  Then switch up things and roll is still on my back, going sideways, from my left shoulder blade to my right shoulder blade.  If gravity or too much pressure is being applied, you can always roll it up way, like a cat on a post.

The RumbleRoller Beastie

Over the past year I have been using the RumbleRoller foam roller to get me back on the road after an IT band injury.  After using and seeing how it worked, I started using the RumbleRoller for self-myofascial release or SMR on different muscle groups and areas to increase my flexibility, relieve stiffness and decrease my recovery time from workouts and/or training sessions.
I started using the RumbleRoller Beastie just recently and am benefiting from the numerous ways they can be used and set up. To begin with, you may ask what is a Beastie. The Beastie is like a spiked dog toy, yet made specially for SMR. It's a deep tissue massage ball. Some people have used tennis balls or golf balls to do similar types of SMR but what these items lack is flexible bumps that are needed to reach into tough areas. Beasties come in two varieties. The clear one, what is called the Original Beastie, has 30 bumps that will dig deep into your muscle tissue and target those trigger points or problem areas. The green one, called the X-Firm Beastie, has the same amount of bumps yet like its name says, is more firm. Caution needs to be used when starting any kind of session with any of these items. If used the wrong way or too aggressive they can cause bruising or lingering pain and you should stop.
The Beasties can be used freely or a base is also available.  The base holds the
Beastie for more controlled use.  With the Beastie in the base, it now can be attached to the Beastie Wall System.  The ball can be adjusted to any height allowing now for you to now lean into the Beastie from the side depending on where on the body you are focusing on treating.
As if the Beasties on their own were not good enough, there is also a Beastie Bar available. This is a rolling stick type of massage tool with two X-Firm Beasties permanently attached to the center of the bar. It comes with stands allowing for hands free use by setting on the ground or attaching to the Beastie Wall System.  With the bar attached to the wall you can now focus on areas of the back, legs or arms.

Podium Cycling's Foam Rollers

Podium Cycling makes foam rollers to help stretch tight muscles from the legs to the back.
I have used both the Level 1 Roller,  18 inches long, spiral shaped, as well as the Level 2 Roller,  13 inches long, with more ridges to roll deeper into muscle tissue.  The Level 2 roller is better suited for traveling due to its size while both rollers are 5 inches in diameter.  Both rollers help with stretching and recovery while massaging your muscles. I recommend for first time users to gradually ease into a recovery or any program using them.  I look forward after a hard workout using the rollers to aid in my recovery.  The foam roller works on removing trigger points, or small knots in your muscles along with flushing away lactic acid.  I use the roller on my lower body (hamstrings, calves and quads) then move onto working it on my upper and lower back. All this is done while laying on the ground either on the carpet or a matt.  Those with sensitive backs may find it uncomfortable and should take caution, as the devices are made to help you, not hurt you. The rollers help increase your flexibility while also improving your core strength. The Podium Cycling foam roller can also help with the redevelopment of muscles and restore the motion to joints in the body.  The foam rollers are designed to not break down which will give you many sessions of muscle recovery.

Different "Sticks" for different athletes

I have had some followers of my blog who viewed "The Stick" video ask what is the difference with the colored handles.  That is a great question and I have an answer.  The red stick I use is a "Sprinter Stick" smaller and mainly used on the legs and with its small size is very good to  travel with.  The blue and yellow handle stick I use is a "Marathon Stick" once again primarily used on the legs, but I use it also on my lower back and neck.  And lastly the black handle stick I use is the "Power Stick" which is recommended  for users who are taller than 5'10", in which I am.  This stick is what I use on all major muscle groups,  and with its length, it is easily used on my back.

"The Stick", a tool I use to warm up and recover from workouts day in and day out.

Sure there are foam rollers out there, but "The Stick" is what you want. The best, self massage tool for runners and triathletes.
