Solid Weekend of Training

A great solid weekend of training.  I am getting more fit, getting my heart-rate in my Zone 3 for long periods of time and feeling more comfortable. It’s a little bit of a stretch to get it into my Zone 4 and keep it there, but I am working on it.

My weekend workouts are my longer ones keeping my shorter cardio workouts and weight sessions during the week.
Last weekend I was able to get a seven mile run in on Saturday. It was very hot and muggy early in the day, but got it done. Followed it up Sunday with a 34 mile road ride with some good climbing. A 3.5 mile hill climb to be in fact. Bouncing back from the workouts is getting easier.
I worked this weekend on fueling a little better than last week. Hydration played a key roll in Sunday’s ride.
To help me stay on top of my hydration game and keeping cool, I really relied on heavily the use of my Spruzza Mist system. The hill climb had me going around 8 MPH so a lot of the cooling air effect wasn't kicking in. The added misting I did, spraying both my chest, opening up my jersey in the front, and misting both sides of my head and ears really kept me from over heating. I knew early on in the ride, I was going to be using it a lot with the hot sun rising as fast as it was without cloud cover.
It’s amazing what either a new pair of shoes can do or not running in “zero-drop” shoes.  I can’t tell because the shoes I have been running in the past year are really broken down, or the “zero-drop” shoes they were made my legs sore. After wearing and testing out a new set of kicks on Saturday’s seven mile run, I recovered very fast and didn’t feel it the next day.
I should have done this a long time ago, but just kept putting it off.
Training is going well and I am very happy where I am at this point in the game.

The Spruzza Mist Cooling System

The Spruzza Mist Cooling System

This is one of four products to help keep you cool in the summer heat. Cycling in the summer with hot temperatures can make your heart rate climb and have an effect on your performance. Using the Spruzza Mist cooling system, cools your body off from 15 to 20 degrees. Mist your face, your neck or your chest. I use it along with other products as the evaporative cooling effect helps in the time it takes to recover from a ride. Ride cooler this summer.

Arctic Cool’s Hydrofreeze X Technology

IT WORKS!  I set out to test and see if the Arctic Cool’s Hydrofreeze X Technology would work as an undershirt of my cycling jersey. It does.  Of course, it is because of the air flow while on the bike provides.  I use the Spruzza Mist, cycling unit misting system, to keep it damp.
The shirt works great for running and while sweating in the heat during outdoor gym workouts.
Summer is on its way and staying cool during workouts is a must. In the gym or outdoor training sessions can be aided with the help of wearing Arctic Cool gear.  Activated by sweat or adding a spray of water starts the process.  The fabric is moisture wicking.  Arctic Cool’s fabric with Hydrofreeze X Technology wicks the moisture away from your body and in turn uses it to activate the fabrics cooling properties. The fabric material is made of 94 percent polyester and six percent spandex while treated to be anti-microbial.  Wash and care of the fabric can be washed in the machine with cold water and like colors. They say it can be put in the dryer but with all my technical clothing I prefer to just hang and let air dry.

Before heading out on a hot evening running, a simple soaking of the shirt in water and ringing out, the cooling effect of the shirt kicks in also.  Humidity and sweat rate, the length of how long the shirt stays wet, or damp, all play a part in how long the cooling lasts.  The wicking of sweat, will keep the shirt activated.

With summer heat, Arctic Cool gear is a must have to stay cool.

After a hot mountain bike ride last Saturday, temperatures hit the low 90’s.  I stopped by my vehicle and grabbed the Arctic Cool, Instant Cooling Towel, which measures 27 inches by 15 inches.  I soaked the towel with water, rung it out and tucked in around my neck with some of it going down in my jersey.  The cooling effect kicked in and felt great.  A nice wind, of moving on the bike, as well as the wind blowing already helped the cooling effect of the towel really work.

The Heat is Here! Combat it NOW!

Summer has arrived and it's time to attach the Spruzza Mist unit back onto my ride.
It is a misting system that is mounted and used on my bike. The bracket can be mounted to the underside of the stem on any bicycles handlebars, road bike, tri bike or even a mountain bike. Summer is upon us here in the Sonoran Desert.

Spruzza is a misting device you squeeze the trigger and allows you to angle the head of the unit so the mist hits your face, neck, or chest, cooling your body down.  The five ounce water reservoir can provide up to 300 squirts of the water mist, so there is plenty usage before having to refill.  After initially setting up the Spruzza on your handlebars, which is very quick and easy to install and comes with all necessary parts to do so. The Spruzza can be removed quickly if you decide you don’t need it for the ride you are going on.  A small “cleat” still stays on the bike with the zip ties attached to it, but the water reservoir and trigger sprayer come off.  The water reservoir is also easy to remove and refill.  The Spruzza delivers a two to three inch diameter spray pattern.

Check back, as a group ride, with the sweet option to test drive one of these units is right around the corner.

The Spruzza Mist System for Staying Cool While Riding

A few months back, friends of mine at Cat-Ears, gave me a Spruzza Mist unit, knowing I live and train in hot desert of Arizona. It is a misting system that is mounted and used on my bike. The bracket can be mounted to the underside of the stem on any bicycles handlebars, road bike, tri bike or even a mountain bike. The weather is getting quite warm now, whether the sun is up or not. Typically while wearing sunglasses you will want to avoid spraying them, as it will end up to water spots on the lenses.

When I have sprayed my face it has been while stopped at a light. David at Spruzza provided me with  tubing ( 2 feet or 24 inches, replacing the 4 1/4 inch tube for the five ounce reservoir) and water bottle set up allowing for water to be accessed from your water bottle mounted in the cage on the down tube of your bike.  So now you can add ice to this water bottle, chilling the water down, as well as be able to fill it with 20 ounces of water. So do the quick math and that ends up to
five ounces being 300 sprays
so 20 ounces would be 1200 sprays.
This is perfect for those super long hot rides, and you don’t have to worry about refilling as you go.
The directions said you can expect a cooling of between 15 and 20 degrees. In the desert heat every little bit helps.

Here is my results of testing the Spruzza, which are not lab certified by any means.

Readings off my skin and clothes were captured by using a dual laser infrared thermometer and seeing how much they cool down from using the Spruzza. Speed on the bike was about 15 to 20 mph with direct sun hitting me. Outside air temperature was 100F degrees. The water in the Spruzza was 70F degree water to start with.

Readings from my chest wearing a jersey started off
at 97F without misting myself and was cooled to 82F after misting.

The next reading had my jersey at 107F and cooling off to 83F after misting.

The final reading had my jersey at my chest hitting 103F and 78F after misting with the Spruzza.
Of course speed and the amount of misting will result in different results. Keep in mind too the humidity in my area is alway pretty low, at the time of testing it was at eight percent.

*speed and humidity as well as sun/shade while using can change results

Here is a special offer BONUS I am passing along. For the first TEN riders to contact David at

and purchase a Spruzza Mist unit, David will include a lid and tubing along with zip ties to attach to your own water bottle giving you up to 1200 sprays. This is a great offer you can't pass up.

With the cooling happening, your body is under less heat stress. Riding or training in hot temperatures will cause your heart rate to increase. This happens as your body will send blood to your skin helping it cool off. Spraying your head, neck and chest with the Spruzza, helps cool the skin making your more comfortable.
